Interesting opinion piece on the economics. It has an example of a company looking to grow IT infrastructure and shows possible cost for running it in-house or in the cloud.

Gartner Top 10 embraces the Cloud: not that it’s of much consequence but Gartner’s ‘Top 10 Strategic Technologies’ includes Cloud Computing. Kind of proof that there’s a lot of fashion and not a lot of foresight…

Anti-virus may soon become obsolete: is the topic of an India Broadband forum…
For the prosecutor: yes, platforms like the iPhone hold your hand to a degree that a virus would not be possible to run.
For the defense: applications in the ‘cloud’ are running in data centers - they can’t get viruses?

Guy Rutenberg has a nice shell script that backs up a wordpress installation (database and files) to Amazon S3.

Amazon has dropped the prices on their S3 storage service. Essentially though you won’t see much good from it unless you are storing or transferring some serious data (> 50 TB). More information at Amazon

Quite a cool set of tools - for Ruby on Rails hipsters you can use the Panda toolset to add Amazon S3/EC2 video handling to your web application. So you can build your own Youtube without incurring all the pain, nor having to plan for servers. Check it out at pandastream.com.

Information Week cover how Mozy have released a mac service for business, enabling online backup and management of that backup service for multiple computers. 50 cents per GB per month is on the face of it more expensive than S3, but then this has more value added and is for a specific purpose.

Netbooks
There’s a great set of reviews for Netbooks and Mini-Laptops on the register for a whole bunch of netbooks. Interestingly the Asus Eee PC 901 won.

Netbooks

IT Tech News has an article detailing the sweet new Asus. This sleek brown laptop is 2.1cm thick, and has an LED backlit 10.2 inch display. It comes with an 64GB SSD which is a lot of space for a netbook but should give a speed boost and a lot of flexibility. Some people have mentioned that this could be a ‘Macbook air for the rest of us’.

I remember seeing Richard Stallman give a talk. His talk was a set of assertions about how he felt things should work around software. Namely that you should not pay for it and you should give the source code. Often programmers have to eat so don’t always subscribe to this point of view. Since web applications like gmail are in ‘the cloud’ and you can’t get the source code, he thinks they are wrong. Seems pretty convenient though, doesn’t it? I don’t want to see the source code to gmail either.
